They are bright coloured drawing materials which have a soft, chalky texture. Soft pastels are easy to use and colours can be blended readily. Smudge and blend with a finger or paper stumps. The side of the pastel can be used to paint large areas and the tip of the pastel to create fine lines. Kneadable erasers can be moulded to lift off dust from pastel drawings to create highlights. Soft pastels can also be used in conjunction with pastel pencils and charcoal.
